Seeing the Unseen

“You see things, and you say, ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say, ‘Why not?'”
–
George Bernard Shaw

Strawberry Singh’s Haunted Meme inspires us to reach way down, and tug at those fraying nerves we like to hide away from the public. And I reached, and I tugged, and wow.. there was some deep ship! *ehem*

Meme Instructions: What are you afraid of? What are you haunted by? Share some of your fears and if you can, create an image depicting one of them. Don’t forget to leave your link in the comments!

I have an aunt who has been blind since her early 20’s not by health reasons. She was the victim of a mugging and shooting, and miraculously came out of it alive. She lost her vision not long after, because of a gunshot wound to the head, hence the miraculous bit.

As a busy and annoying 6 year old, it would never cease to amaze me, how she would get up and off the couch, head straight for the light switch with no feelers! Turn the blimey thing on, head to the kitchen and cook. She only ever asked for help with transportation and as I grew older, her independent streak was about as stubborn as our Tutu (grandpa) was, in insisting she just ‘stay’ home.

The past few hours I’ve read various fears and phobias from all around the sphere, and relate to a lot of them. I too used to be afraid of heights or until it dawned on me it wasn’t the heights that gave me trouble, it was depth perception. Just knowing that helped me to overcome it.

I used to be deathly afraid of spiders as well, until I realized I have an AWESOME vacuum cleaner. I’ve never cared much for ghosts, spirits, cemeteries, probably because I would be one of those people pranking or canooodling O.O I was born and raised in Maui and we have our fair share of resident ghosts and spirits, they’re sort of  like relatives.. we just leave out a plate lunch and go about our day :/

Lately I’ve been more aware about how we take our sensory organs for granted. I do not understand how my aunt has lived in a world of darkness all these years, but for the grace of God. This is something I am still working out. I don’t mind dark rooms, as long as I know that light is coming, artificial or natural. My aunt tells me that there are times, she is grateful that she can’t see whats going on in the world around her. She sees the unseen.

She is well into her 40’s now with children of her own and they often tell me, that if fate had given them a mother who could see, they would undoubtedly have grown up with only a paltry amount of the love and wisdom that she has imparted to them.

That being said, the fear of going blind, while still daunting to me, probably is not as bad as losing ones confidence in self identity.
Maybe not being able to ‘see’ is better than having a blind heart.

Thanks for dropping by today, and be sure to check out the rest of Strawberry Singh’s memes/challenges at her website! Its never too late to start 🙂

  2. Love this so much ❤ I am opposite of your Aunt, I am slowly losing my sight, I don't know which is worse to have never seen or to have seen and know one day you no longer will. But I suppose as long as I do see there is always hope that there will be a way to save my sight. I sit here with a heart open to you! Happy weekend my friend! ❤
